Friday 5th July – 3 Walks *** cloudy, windy and dizzle :(

Another grim weather day :( Dark cloud and windy. We didn’t rush and had breakfast listening to the pop quiz on radio 2 which we are quite addicted to but never do very well at!!! Had a nice chat with a lady who arrived to take her 3 little dogs for a walk. Drove a few hundred yards down the road to Barpa Langas the ancient burial chamber car park and walked up to what really looked like a pile of rocks. It had a doorway but it said that for safety reasons they had had to close access :( I just moved the sign and went in anyway. Nothing in there but amazing just the same. We followed the posts which lead you to the summit of Beinn Langass (actually made it to a peak!) and on to the supposed stone circle of Pobull Fhinn and although we followed the posts to the end we were never really sure whether we saw them or not! There were some ordinary looking rocks in a sort of circle so we assume that was it. A bit disappointing after the others we have seen this year. We had to walk over yet more peaty bog – it doesn’t matter how high the hill you are on it is always wet bog – you would think that it would dry up on a slope! We walked back through specially planted woodland – all firs. There are no natural trees on the island so it is quite unusual and was a very nice wood. There were a couple more stones just as you went in. We came out where we parked last night and walked back to the van along the road. Drove to Lochmaddy which is where the ferry to Sky comes in and went to the tourist information there but nothing different in there. Drove around the island looking for something – not sure quite what, and were disappointed. We looked for the spot the dogwalker at the wood recommended near Sollas we drove onto the Machair and had our lunch on another white beach where the tide was out miles and I went for a long walk on the most wonderful beach. Drove round some more and quite frankly it is quite depressing :( the weather is taking it’s toll on us now – oh for some sunnhy still days when then islands would look so’oooooo much better! All the same scenery, a few hills and lots of lochs and the weather bleak and dark :( We did feel better when we saw another male hen harrier and another short eared owl. Drove over the causeway to the island of Berneray, found where the ferry to Harris queuing area was, filled up with water and rang to book onto the 10.25 ferry tomorrow morning even though we know it is going to be windy and rough! A bit further along we found some traditional old thatched cottages and a lovely beach and the sky did start to clear. We are parked in the dunes overlooking the island of Harris across the Harris sound where the ferry comes in. If only we found this top spot earlier as a small island just offshore provides some great flatwater – we might have to postpone the ferry tomorrow and hope it’s not too windy!!! Went for a walk on the beach.
